‘Tis the season – tax season that is. Between now and May 15, 2022, many nonprofit organizations will submit their annual tax reporting paperwork to the IRS. (Of note: this form is due the 15th day of the 5th month after an organization’s fiscal year-end. Organizations with a year-end date of 12/31, should file before the May 15 deadline.)
Do you know there are many different types of Form 990s? The most common are:
Form 990 full-length
Form 990-EZ
Form 990-N (e-postcard)
Form 990-PF
The size and type of a nonprofit organization determines which is the appropriate form, and each comes with its own set of filing requirements. The full-length Form 990 is required for nonprofits who gross $200,000 or more in total revenue, or total assets of $500,000 or more. The Forms 990-EZ is for organizations between $50,000 and $200,000, and the Form 990-N for those under $50,000. The Form 990-PF is strictly for private foundations.
For the first time this year, all organizations are required to submit these forms electronically. And, if an organization fails to file a Form 990 for three consecutive years, their 501(c)(3) nonprofit status will be revoked. Yikes!
How do you know if you need to file a Form 990? If an organization qualifies for tax-exempt status (and doesn’t fall under one of the 990 filing exceptions), then you need to file. All forms are available at irs.gov for viewing and downloading to complete for submission. If you have questions about Form 990s, check with your auditor, tax professional, or NonprofitGO.
